Finding my dream wedding dress is something I've been thinking about since I was little. I've spent countless hours watching 'Say Yes to the Dress', and believed that one day I would have a very similar experience. The women, surrounded by their closest friends and family, try on several beautiful dresses until eventually they find the one that they love. With the approval of their loved ones, they buy the dress of their dreams and live happily ever after. Well, my experience was a little different. Clark and I became engaged in May. We had a trip to Colorado planned for the beginning of August, so I decided to book a few appointments at different bridal shops for while there. I called my bridesmaids, mom, and future mother-in-law, and asked them all to join me. I imagined a day of celebrating, drinking champagne, trying on stunning dresses, etc.
Through out the summer leading up to this trip, I began browsing dresses online. I had known for a long time exactly what kind of dress I wanted, but I still loved to constantly look. As I looked through the many dresses, trying to find one that would meet all of my criteria, I began to get nervous. Each dress I saw had one or two of the characteristics I loved, but none featured all of them. However, I kept my hopes high knowing that I would soon return home and have the chance to try on a large variety of dresses. Despite all of this, there is one thing you should know about me that completely changes everything.. I am awful at waiting. I say things like "oh I'll wait to buy that top until it goes on sale" or "I won't even look at that until I get home", but it never lasts. This situation was no different. I was out and about with my friend/bridesmaid Eunice, when we remembered their was a bridal shop around the corner. We decided to just take a peak inside to get an idea of things I might like. As we headed for the door, not finding the perfect one, we noticed a dress on a mannequin in the corner. We could only see the back, but I immediately got that feeling.. that tingly feeling inside that said "Erin, this is it!" We walked, or maybe ran, over to the dress and looked it up and down. It was love at first sight. The women working in the shop were extremely kind and encouraged me to take pictures. I explained that I wouldn't be interested in trying it on because I was waiting until I was home with my friends and family, but they were still very helpful. After getting pictures, finding out it was in Clark and I's budget, getting the name of the dress, and the designer, I rushed home and called my mom. She agreed that the dress was beautiful and encouraged me to find out if it was also in Denver. A little research online showed me that the designer was in only one store in Colorado, and that the dress was not there. I could however pay $100 to have a sample shipped to the store to try on when I was home in August. After talking it over with my mom, we concluded that before paying $100, I should try it on here in Milwaukee and see if it was worth it. The next morning Eunice and I went back to the store. I put on the dress while Eunice got my mom on FaceTime. I walked out, looked in the mirror, and knew. That was it. This was absolutely, without any doubt, my dress. It had every detail that I had ever dreamt of. We showed my parents and Clark's parents and everyone agreed. When I considered having a sample shipped to the store in Colorado, my mom, the woman of reason, talked me out of it. Why take the risk that someone not like it after I'd already fallen in love with it? Why pay extra money to try it on again? Why give the sale to anyone other than the amazing women who had helped me to find this dress? She was completely right. After trying on two different veils, and finding the perfect one, I had my measurements taken and dress ordered. All within 24 hours, I had found the dress of my dreams and paid for it. So to anyone out their dreaming of their perfect dress, remember that it might not be the right timing, or the place you expected to find it, but it only takes one time to find your One & Only.
